Connor Holds Spring Cleaning Book Drive

CREST HILL, Ill. – To help incarcerated men and women take steps toward a brighter future, state Rep. John Connor, D-Lockport, and state Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, are collecting gently used books for donation to correctional facilities in Illinois.

“Reading provides a wealth of opportunities to learn and exercise one’s mind, even when you may be incarcerated.” Connor said. “Studies have repeatedly shown that increasing education initiatives within prisons leads to lower recidivism rates.  Donated books help men and women in custody prepare for a productive future when they re-enter society, saving taxpayers millions of dollars. If having more donated books in jail and prison libraries can help us reduce prison populations and save money, why wouldn’t we?”

Connor is collecting used fiction and nonfiction books to be donated to men’s and women’s correctional facilities in Illinois. Donations can be dropped off Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Connor’s district office, located at 16151 Weber Rd., Suite 103 in Crest Hill. Books will be collected through Friday, May 31.

“When you’re doing your spring cleaning this year, try to remember the individuals who can benefit from books that you may no longer want,” Connor said. “I encourage all local residents to participate in donating books and to help play a part in creating better futures for the men and women reentering society.”
