SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Aurora’s Illinois Math and Science Academy will be able to more easily afford renovations under a bill sponsored by state Rep. Barbara Hernandez, D-Aurora, which allows the school to work freely with private companies.

“High-quality education is a crucial resource,” Hernandez said. “IMSA provides an invaluable service for Illinois. Unfortunately, many of their buildings are in dire need of repair. Allowing the academy to contract with private companies will help them afford much-needed improvements.”

Hernandez is supporting House Bill 2606, which clears the way for the Illinois Math and Science Academy to form public-private partnerships to improve campus facilities, including replacing the school’s 30-year-old dormitories. School administrators believe the partnerships will give them leeway to negotiate lower prices.

“Illinois needs to allow its institutions to be at their best,” Hernandez said. “IMSA can cut costs while undergoing hugely important renovations that will raise the quality of education they provide.”
