Moylan Bill Tackles Privacy and Drones

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, has introduced legislation to punish drone operators who violate the privacy of others by using a drone to record video or take photos on a property without the landowner’s consent. 

“While technological advancement has been wonderful, we must adapt to it,” Moylan said. “The wrongful use of drones can have significant negative effects on privacy and safety for homeowners and commercial property owners.”

Moylan’s House Bill 2874 would criminalize drone operators for violating the privacy of landowners by either taking video or pictures of the property or otherwise invading the reasonable expectation of privacy of another person. Most recreational and all commercial drones must be registered with the Federal Aviation Administration to help ensure proper and legal operation. Moylan supported legislation last session allowing airports to fine drone operators for the illegal use of a drone in or near the airspace around an airport.

“Drones offer a new way to see the world, but that way must be mindful of others,” Moylan said. “Individuals can and will use drones beyond hobby purposes, and we have to address that concern proactively.”
