SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Fred Crespo, D-Hoffman Estates, released the following statement responding to a Tribune/ProPublica Illinois investigation revealing the disturbing use of student isolation in schools across the state:
“It cannot be understated how disturbing these revelations are as it is clear that they are not only unlawful but an abusive way to treat children. While we are lucky to have a robust press that works to ensure institutions and individuals are held accountable, the responsibility should not fall entirely on them. Over the last few years, there has been a pattern in which administrative officials whether it be DCFS or CPS and ISBE failing to protect the children they’re responsible for.
“When a child is in crisis, they should be supported by trained professionals. This practice is barbaric. I am prepared to work will all of my colleagues to ensure the safety and well-being of Illinois children and that individuals are held accountable.”
Crespo serves as an Assistant Majority Leader in the House, as well as the Vice Chairperson of both the Elementary & Secondary Education: School Curriculum & Policies Committee and Administration, Licensing & Charter School Committee.
