Carroll Sponsors Bill to Expand Access to Epipens for Children

​SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Fighting to expand health coverage to children with food allergies, state Rep. Jonathan Carroll, D-Northbrook, recently introduced legislation to include epinephrine injectors (epipens) in policy plans.

“Food allergies are becoming increasingly prevalent in children these days, and we need to have their best interests at heart with their medical care,” Carroll said. “My legislation will give families the relief they need so their health plans cover the costs of epipens.”

Carroll’s House Bill 3435 would require health insurance providers to restructure their policies to accommodate persons 18 years of age or under and is intended to provide epinephrine injectors or epipens to children diagnosed with food allergies. Carroll knows firsthand the dangers of food allergies and the life-saving benefits that epipens provide people in severe situations.

“This is an issue that is deeply personal to my family, and I am committed to addressing the health needs of children and parents so they do not have to continue living with uncertainty,” Carroll said. “It is crucial that we take this step to protect children from the dangerous effects of food allergies and we continue raising awareness about these issues.”
