AURORA, Ill. – State Rep. Barbara Hernandez, D-Aurora, recently visited a farm in Woodford County, Illinois to meet farmers and learn about the importance of agriculture throughout the whole state, through the Illinois Farm Bureau’s Adopt-a-Legislator program.
“Visiting with these farmers was such a fun, interactive way to get a better feel of the hard work that they do day in and day out for the benefit of the whole of the state,” said Hernandez. “Although I do not have too much farmland in my own district, agriculture is a crucial part of our state’s economy, from the food we eat, to the hundreds of jobs the industry creates, and I am very grateful to have experienced it all firsthand.”
The Illinois Farm Bureau’s Adopt-a-Legislator program pairs up city and suburban legislators with Illinois farmers from a different district. Last month, the farmers were able to visit Hernandez’s district and learn more about her community and discuss common issues, ways to collaborate in the future.
