SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – As utility giant Peoples Gas pushes rapid, unexpected rate increases on local customers, families would receive protection from unfair energy bills under a measure sponsored by state Rep. Theresa Mah, D-Chicago.

“As families struggle with the rising cost of everyday expenses, this is no time to be forced to deal with surprise charges in our energy bills,” said Mah. “Peoples Gas is unfairly hitting local families with new costs when we can least afford it, in order to fund a project that’s being implemented with very little oversight and accountability.”

Mah’s House Bill 3044 would crack down on utility officials’ reckless spending on a pipeline-replacement project that is billions of dollars over budget by requiring Peoples Gas to justify any rate increase that they pass on to customers. To join Mah’s fight against higher natural gas costs, residents can sign her online petition at http://tinyurl.com/stopratehikes.

“My legislation provides an essential check on energy rates, to stop Peoples Gas from imposing drastic rate hikes on consumers,” said Mah. “This will help ensure working families, senior citizens and low-income residents are able to afford their energy bills, and protect them against unfair and unexpected costs.”

Mah is serving her second term representing the 2nd District, which includes the Chicago neighborhoods of McKinley Park, Pilsen, Chinatown, Bridgeport, Brighton Park and Back of the Yards. For more information, please contact Mah’s district office at 872-281-5775.
