D’Amico Backs Proposal To Allow Sponsorships for College Athletes

CHICAGO – State Rep. John D’Amico, D-Chicago, supported legislation that allows college athletes to receive compensation for sponsorships or endorsements this week.

“While college sports generate billions of dollars for the NCAA, collegiate conferences and universities, student athletes are completely left out,” D’Amico said. “Between academic responsibilities, practice and competition, student athletes face a rigorous schedule and they simply don’t have time for a part-time job. This proposal will allow athletes to partner with local businesses and earn a few bucks.”

D’Amico passed House Bill 3904, the Student Athlete Endorsement Act, to allow student athletes at all colleges and universities in Illinois to receive compensation for the use of their name, image or likeness in endorsements and sponsorship opportunities. The move follows action in California and other states to institute similar laws.

“This proposal is the fair and equitable thing to do, especially for college athletes who come from impoverished areas and are struggling to get by,” D’Amico said. “Most importantly, these young people will receive invaluable real-world business skills and experience that will serve as an asset to their future career, whether as a professional athlete, or for the vast majority of collegiate athletes, as they search for their first job as college graduates.”
