Reitz Pushes for Greater Support for Law Enforcement in the Wake of Attacks on State Troopers

RED BUD, Ill. – State Rep. Nathan Reitz, D-Steeleville, is sponsoring legislation imposing tougher penalties on criminals who harm law enforcement officers and other first responders. Reitz is bringing legislation forth in the wake of several recent attacks on law enforcement, including the tragic passing of State Police Trooper Nicholas Hopkins, who was killed in the line of duty this past August.

“State Trooper Hopkins, who lost his life while bringing a criminal to justice, as well as the other courageous men and women in law enforcement, are putting their safety on the line to keep us secure. We need to have their backs,” Reitz said. “The vicious attacks on first responders warrant a strong reaction, and I’m determined to make sure that happens.”

Reitz is spearheading House Bill 3922, legislation which increases the penalties on criminals who attack or seek to harm any member of law enforcement because of their occupation and classifies them as hate offenses.

Reitz is also offering free “We Support Police” signs for any people who want to show their support for law enforcement at his office located at 124 Locust Street in Red Bud. Community members can reach Reitz at 618-282-7284.
