Reitz Measure to Protect Worker Privacy Passes Illinois House

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – In response to the United States Supreme Court ruling on Janus v. American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Council 31, state Rep. Nathan Reitz, D-Steeleville recently passed legislation to protect the privacy of workers

“As a former member of IBEW Local 51, I understand the importance of organized labor and the important role a skilled workforce plays in growing our economy and creating new jobs,” said Reitz. “While politicians have used union busting tactics to target workers, organized labor has been proven to be a pathway to the middle class and has deep roots in the Midwest, especially here in the Southern Illinois.”

Reitz’s Senate Bill 1784 recently passed out of the Illinois House of Representatives with bipartisan support. Reitz’s measure, which will protect worker privacy by making employee personal information exempt from the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), is supported by a wide coalition of labor organizations including the AFL-CIO, AFSCME, SEIU, IFT, IEA, INA, LiUNA!, UFCW Local 881, IBEW Local 51.

“The millionaires and billionaires running corporations have no regard of what is in the best interest of the workers they employ, so I am thankful to have passed this legislation to and continue my efforts to stand up for working families,” continued Reitz. “Building a stronger Illinois begins with building a stronger middle class by creating new jobs, employing a skilled workforce and supporting organized labor and workers.”
