Mussman-Backed Measure to Rein in Insulin Costs Passes House and Senate

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Furthering her commitment to make health care and prescription drug costs more affordable for Illinois residents, state Rep. Michelle Mussman, D-Schaumburg, helped pass legislation to lower the cost of insulin for diabetics in Illinois.

“The cost of prescription insulin has increased significantly in recent years, forcing many to ration their insulin supplies and put their health at risk,” Mussman said. “It’s time that we stop allowing prescription drug manufacturers and insurance companies to charge outrageous prices for insulin, and this legislation puts a cap on co-pays to help ensure that insulin remains more affordable for those who need it.”

The Mussman-backed Senate Bill 667 limits insulin co-pays to $100 a month, regardless of the amount that an insurer pays. According to the Yale School of Medicine, one in four diabetics currently ration their insulin as a result of skyrocketing prices. Between 2002 and 2013, out-of-pocket costs increased nearly 300%, placing a severe financial burden on many of the 1.3 million Illinois residents who require insulin to manage their diabetes. The legislation passed in both the House and Senate this week with strong bipartisan support.

“Setting a cap on monthly payments for insulin can help save lives, and this measure is necessary to make sure that no Illinois resident foregoes the treatment they need because of the cost,” Mussman said. “Expanding access to health care is critical, and I am committed to continuing the fight to provide affordable care to every Illinois resident.”
