AURORA, Ill. – To help seniors protect themselves against frequent scams occurring throughout Illinois, state Rep. Barbara Hernandez, D-Aurora, is partnering with the Illinois Attorney General’s office to host a fraud prevention seminar on Thursday, Sept. 19 at the Prisco Community Center, located at 150 W. Illinois Ave. in Aurora from noon to 1 p.m.

“Seniors have been the biggest target for consumer fraud and identity theft, so it is very important that they have the tools and tips on how to protect themselves,” said Hernandez. “As I walk door to door in our community, I hear stories about seniors getting scammed through phone calls and fake mail. It is crucial that our seniors know what is real and what is not, because I do not want their hard-earned money to be taken away from them.”

The Attorney General’s office will give a 40 minute presentation covering typical scams targeted at seniors, important information on how to spot them, and who to report the fraud to. Following the presentation there will be a brief question-and-answer with Hernandez on other ways she is supporting seniors in the community. This event is free and open to the public.

“This is a very important seminar for those of all ages, but the senior population has shown to be the biggest targets to scams and identity theft,” said Hernandez. “That is why I am encouraging local residents to come to this presentation and hopefully learn something new about how to protect themselves and their loved ones. These crimes do not stop at consumer fraud, and I look forward to working with the Attorney General’s office again in the future to help protect our community.”
