Lilly Measure to Help Students with Anger Management Issues Now Law

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – A measure to assist students with anger management problems from state Rep. Camille Y. Lilly, D-Chicago, is now law.

“It is imperative that we give at-risk young people who have trouble managing anger the support they need and deserve to succeed as students,” Lilly said. “This law will convene experts, including school social workers, children’s mental health practitioners and educators, to develop standards and best practices for serving students with anger management concerns.”

House Bill 3086, sponsored by Lilly, directs the Illinois Emotional Intelligence and Social and Emotional Learning Task Force to provide education professionals with approaches and tactics for addressing the needs of students with anger management issues. The task force is made up of a variety of stakeholders including educators, school social workers and experts in the field of children’s mental health. Lilly’s law will direct schools on how to access program funding to serve students with anger management problems and provide educators with best practices for instruction for these students.

“Every student deserves a chance to have a fair and equitable education, including at-risk students who have problems with anger,” Lilly said. “This law will help ensure that Illinois teachers have the tools necessary to ensure that students with anger management issues can succeed.”
