SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – As a part of her continued efforts to bring property tax relief to area homeowners, state Rep. Katie Stuart, D-Edwardsville, recently supported legislation to create the Illinois Property Tax Relief Fund.

“There is an immense property tax burden on local homeowners, which is unfortunately pushing many families to consider crossing the river and moving to Missouri,” said Stuart. “It is clear that more must be done to bring relief to families, so I worked to pass legislation to create a rebate program through the Property Tax Relief Fund.”

Stuart supported Senate Bill 39, which creates the Illinois Property Tax Relief Fund to provide homeowners with rebates to help address rising property tax bills. Through this measure, after homeowners apply for their homestead exemptions, every county accessor will be responsible for certifying the number of exemptions with the Illinois Comptroller. The Comptroller will calculate the rebate amount determined by the amount of money in the fund and the number of general homestead exemptions awarded in the state, and rebates will be issued to homeowners.

“One of my top priorities as state representative is ensuring there are no new taxes placed on middle-class families, which is why I voted against the income tax hike in 2017 and fought against the burdensome mileage tax proposal,” continued Stuart. “Bringing real property tax relief to local homeowners goes hand-in-hand with this commitment, and I am happy to see this legislation become law.”
