ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. – In response to recent attacks on the immigrant community, state Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, will be hosting a Know Your Rights Seminar with Mano a Mano and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office on Monday, August 26 at 6 p.m. at the Robert W. Rolek Community Center, located at 814 Hart Road in Round Lake.

“With escalating attacks on the immigrant community, we must ensure that our neighbors know their rights,” Yingling said. “What’s taking place around the country is affront to our values and I’m working at the state-level to ensure protections are place to combat Donald Trump’s agenda and keep families together.”

Representatives from the Attorney General’s Office and Mano a Mano will provide local residents with information about their rights as immigrants, what to do when being questioned by law enforcement or an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent and the limits of what the government can do.

This spring, Yingling supported efforts to prohibit local law enforcement from entering into agreements with ICE agents to separate families; ban for-profit detention centers; and to make it unlawful for landlords to evict or harass a tenant based on their immigration status.

“We know many of our immigrant families are fearful and anxious about the uncertainty of their future. Our main goal is to educate, empower and encourage our community to stand up and exercise their rights in this country regardless of their immigration status,” said Dulce Ortiz, Executive Director of Mano a Mano. “Our children’s mental health and wellbeing is in jeopardy because of this national anti-immigrant sentiment. We are giving their parents the proper tools to deal with ICE through these workshops so they can better protect their families,” she added.
