SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Under legislation passed by state Rep. Nathan Reitz, D-Steeleville, seniors would have up to 15 days to cancel contracts they have signed with door-to-door salesmen.
“Unfortunately, many scammers prey on seniors, and they are often the target for shady contractors and fast-talking salesmen who push them to sign contracts for services they do not need or cannot afford,” said Reitz. “This legislation will protect seniors from deceptive business practices by giving them more time to review contracts they have signed.”
Reitz backed House Bill 2643, which will expand the window for consumers over the age of 65 to cancel certain contracts from three days to 15 days, protecting seniors by allowing cancellation even if the work has been initiated and prohibiting contractors from selling contracts to lenders. The legislation passed the Illinois House and Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support, and has been sent to the governor’s desk to be signed into law.
“Extending the window of time for seniors to change their mind about a contract they have signed is a commonsense approach to defending seniors from deception and fraud,” continued Reitz. “I will continue working to protect our seniors from scammers, fraudulent contractors and those looking to take advantage of them.”
