SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Joyce Mason, D-Gurnee, issued the following statement after voting for a Fair Tax amendment Monday, a first step toward tax relief for 97% of local residents:
“Middle-class families are struggling under our current tax system, which places a greater burden on them than millionaires and billionaires who can afford to contribute a little more to fund our schools, critical infrastructure and services. A Fair Tax ensures the ultra-wealthy pay their fair share to balance the state’s budget, while taking a critical step toward modest tax relief for those who need it most.
“There is more work to be done to get Illinois back on track, including finalizing real property tax relief for middle-class homeowners and retirees. I will continue fighting for polices that strengthen the middle class, including expanding access to training programs for high-wage jobs and making health care and expensive prescription drugs more affordable. Passing the Fair Tax amendment today is the first step forward after four years of crisis.”
