SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – To recognize and honor the meaningful contributions of social workers across the state, state Rep. Karina Villa, D-West Chicago, is designating March 2019 as Social Work Month in Illinois.
“Social workers provide critical services to our most vulnerable residents, including children, seniors and survivors of trauma or abuse. Designating March as Social Work Month in Illinois is about celebrating the contributions of social workers throughout our state,” said Villa. “I am tremendously proud of my background as a school social worker, and as state Representative I will continue to be an advocate for the invaluable work that social workers do in our local communities.”
Villa is sponsoring House Resolution 70, which will declare March 2019 as Social Work Month in the state of Illinois. In the United States, social workers make up the largest portion of mental health providers. Illinois has over 25,000 social workers employed by schools, social service agencies and the military who work to enhance the wellbeing of families, children and veterans.
“Social work programs and other mental health services often seem to be the first programs to face budget cuts, and throughout the budget impasse, many residents of our state suffered without access to services to help them cope with crisis,” continued Villa. “Speaking from experience I can tell you that despite these challenges, social workers still go to work every day and do a difficult job because they know that our most vulnerable depend upon them. They deserve to be recognized as the dedicated public servants they are.”
