SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Sonya Harper, D-Chicago, is encouraging residents to join the push for commonsense marijuana legalization at Cannabis Equity Lobby Day in Springfield on Tuesday, May 7.

“As legislators finally have a long overdue conversation about fairer and more reasonable marijuana laws, I am asking residents to join us in that conversation by coming to Springfield,” Harper said. “Nothing is more powerful for legislators than hearing the voices of Illinoisans advocate for the causes they believe in.”

Harper is hosting Cannabis Equity Lobby Day on Tuesday, May 7 at the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield in partnership with Chicago Votes, Revolution Enterprises, and The Port Ministries in order to ensure that recreational cannabis legalization is equitable and puts black and brown communities devastated by the War on Drugs at the forefront of opportunity. Advocates will participate in a press conference, lobby legislators and host a reception. Residents interested in finding out more information can contact Harper’s office at 773-925-6580 or RepSonyaHarper@gmail.com or sign up at bit.ly/cannabisld.

“With an equitable and fair approach to adult recreational marijuana use, we can repair the historic injustices that have taken place against black and brown communities,” Harper added. “But we can’t get there if legislators aren’t hearing the voices of Illinoisans demanding justice and equity.”

Harper represents the 6th District, which includes all or portions of Armour Square, Bridgeport, Chicago Lawn, Englewood, Gage Park, Back of the Yards, Canaryville, New City, West Englewood, and Marquette Park.
