SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, is sponsoring legislation that would prohibit the General Assembly from creating additional units of local government.

“The people of Illinois are already buried under layer upon layer of local government,” said Yingling. “Homeowners in Illinois pay some of the highest property taxes throughout the country, and we need to be cutting government waste and consolidating our different layers of local government to help our taxpayers keep more of their hard-earned dollars.”

Yingling is supporting Senate Bill 1215 to prevent the Illinois General Assembly from passing any law creating new units of local government until 2022. According to Governing magazine, Illinois has more local government units than any other state, which has a direct impact on how much residents pay in property taxes. Yingling, a consistent advocate for cutting wasteful government, has introduced and sponsored a variety of bills reducing local government and holding local elected officials accountable.

“Government at all levels must be held accountable and act responsibly,” said Yingling. “We must ensure every layer of government is working to improve the lives of middle-class families in Illinois.”
