SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Sue Scherer, D-Decatur, released the following statement after Gov. J.B. Pritzker delivered his first budget address to the General Assembly:

“Illinois is still digging out from years of budget stalemate and financial crisis under the previous administration. I care about our communities and as I talk with people, they want financial stability and security from the state. The only way we can provide that is to pass a state budget on time every year while being fiscally responsible.

“I was encouraged to hear Governor Pritzker today recognize the serious challenges we face ahead. I look forward to working with the governor and my colleagues, both Democrat and Republican, to pass a state budget that protects funding for vital state programs for the elderly, education, children with developmental disabilities, low-income families, college students and other essential services.

“Throughout the budget negotiations and as a member of the Appropriations-Capital committee, I will do my part to evaluate our financial needs and prioritize state spending in a responsible manner. In order to get our state back on track, we need to work cooperatively and in good faith with all stakeholders.”
