CHICAGO – State Rep. Kelly Cassidy, D-Chicago, issued the following statement Thursday after Cook County State’s Attorney Kimberly Foxx announced her support for Cassidy’s proposal to legalize adult-use cannabis in Illinois:
“I would like to thank State’s Attorney Foxx for her support of this proposal that would help correct bad public policy that has damaged thousands of lives in Illinois.
“Legalizing cannabis is an issue of social justice. The war on drugs has disproportionately affected communities of color, incarcerating tens of thousands and destroying the futures of young people across our state. We must face the scientific fact that cannabis is less harmful than alcohol and treat it similarly.
“I’m proud to have the support of State’s Attorney Foxx as we continue this process, someone who shares my commitment to fighting for smart criminal justice reforms. Providing conviction relief to those prosecuted on non-violent, cannabis-related offenses is a strong first step in helping right the injustice that many have faced and providing them with the same opportunities for housing and employment. I look forward to continuing to work with her on this important project and this legislation.”
