“This position will ensure the people of our community always have a seat at the table and a voice on the issues I hear about every day from people in our community,” said Willis. “The last four years under Bruce Rauner’s failed governorship was a daily assault on middle-class families, where House Democrats fought to defend middle-class wages, health care and other benefits. Now, we have a chance to not only protect families, but truly form bipartisan agreement on policies that will help them climb the economic ladder.”
Willis will serve as the majority conference chairperson. In her role, she will look to represent the interests of a diverse Democratic Caucus, as well as find common ground with Republican lawmakers to implement progressive policies. Willis’ priorities include a fairer tax structure that cuts taxes for the middle class, more affordable and accessible health care coverage and measures that ensure small and medium-sized businesses can compete with their larger corporate counterparts. Additionally, Willis will give a voice to the emerging issues that face Illinois, like legalization of recreational cannabis.
“I am ready to work with both my Democratic and Republican colleagues to make Illinois a state that works for everyone,” said Willis. “I am confident that when we focus on the issues that bring us together, we will overcome any obstacle.”
