DES PLAINES, Ill. – Focused on combating gun violence and saving lives, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, praised Thursday’s signing of commonsense licensing standards for gun dealers.
“I am thankful for the help of my colleagues and other devoted advocates in securing the passage of this bill to crack down on gun violence,” said Moylan. “We are finally taking action to place the safety of Illinois residents first, and serving with a new governor who shares this goal is extremely encouraging.”
The Moylan-backed Senate Bill 337 requires the Illinois State Police to certify gun dealers and better track private firearm sales. The new law requires criminal background checks on all gun dealer employees, creates annual training for gun shop employees who handle background checks and gives greater authority for law enforcement to visit and inspect gun dealer locations. The new law also increases accountability and oversight from gun retailers by requiring the presence of video surveillance cameras to prevent theft or other illegal activity.
“I want to thank Rep. Moylan and all the members of the Illinois General Assembly who voted to keep illegal guns out of our communities,” said Kathleen Sances, President and CEO of the Illinois Gun Violence Prevention PAC (GPAC). “Our streets, communities and families will be safer now that Senate Bill 337 is the law of the land and we are grateful to all of the legislators who put public safety first.”
