CHICAGO – State Rep. John D’Amico, D-Chicago, is reminding residents about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs during the holiday season.

“I encourage residents to designate a sober driver or have an alternative when they travel to their holiday gatherings,” D’Amico said. “It’s everyone’s responsibility to make decisions to avoid impaired driving and keep the roads safe for all.”

The Illinois Department of Transportation has reported 984 traffic fatalities so far this year, a 4 percent decline over last year. This December, D’Amico urges residents to help prevent casualties and keep the roadways safe.

Residents are recommended to have a designated driver, call a cab or simply not drink and drive. Residents can learn about penalties for DUI convictions such as losing driving privileges, jail sentencing and fines at www.idot.illinois.gov/transportation-system/safety/roadway/drive-sober.

“No family should endure the loss of a loved one caused by impaired driving,” said D’Amico. “I urge everyone to drive safely and keep their family safe during holiday festivities.”
