Harper Passes Legislation to Train Students and Faculty in the Event of School Shootings

CHICAGO – To increase school teacher and student preparedness during a mass shooting, state Rep. Sonya M. Harper, D-Chicago, helped pass legislation that would require schools to hold law enforcement drills to within 90 days of the first day of school.

“We’ve had enough school shootings across this country that have claimed the lives of too many young people who haven’t even had a chance to live yet,” said Harper. “As a parent, I want to make sure that students and teachers know proper procedures and drills to protect themselves if the absolute worst happens at their school.”

Harper supported Senate Bill 2350, which requires Illinois schools hold an active shooter drill within the first 90 days of the school opening for its fall semester. Law enforcement would address the necessary steps for students and teachers to take in the event of a school shooting.

“We should not wait for another tragedy to strike to find out if our schools are prepared. Taking precautions, training students and teachers on emergency responses and being prepared for any situation will help keep everyone safe at school,” said Harper. “Given the amount of shootings that keep happening across our country, no one can take safety for granted and we need to stay vigilant for our children’s safety.”

Harper represents the 6th District, which includes all or portions of Armour Square, Bridgeport, Chicago Lawn, Englewood, Gage Park, Back of the Yards, Canaryville, New City, West Englewood, and Marquette Park.
