SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Sonya M. Harper, D-Chicago, supported legislation to maintain a critical middle-class tax exemption that would prevent an unaffordable tax hike on families.

“The families I represent and fight for each day depend on income tax relief each year,” said Harper. “The legislation I supported ensures that a critical income tax exemption is preserved to give working families a break.”

Harper supported Senate Bill 1437, which would maintain an income tax exemption that is set to partially expire this year. The exemption is currently worth $2,175 but is scheduled to roll back to $2,000. If the governor ignores to enact this bill, then middle-class families will pay even more taxes.

“We just passed a negotiated, balanced budget that begins to put Illinois on the right track, which the governor signed,” said Harper. “I urge him to act in good faith and also work with me to prevent more taxes from hurting the middle class.”

Harper represents the 6th District, which includes all or portions of Armour Square, Bridgeport, Chicago Lawn, Englewood, Gage Park, Back of the Yards, Canaryville, New City, West Englewood, and Marquette Park.
