Moylan Bump-Stock Legislation Passes Committee

DES PLAINES, Ill. – A bi-partisan effort to ban bump stocks and trigger cranks sponsored by state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, has passed the House Judiciary Committee and will move to the House floor.

“After what we have seen with the continuous, multiple shootings in schools and communities in America, we need to do everything we can to become a safer society,” Moylan said. “These bump stocks and trigger cranks are only loopholes for gun manufacturers and pose a threat to our families.”

Currently, machine guns that fire at a rapid rate are illegal in Illinois and across the country. However, gun manufacturers have been able to use loopholes around the current laws to be able to sell accessories like bump stocks and trigger cranks, to make guns fire at similar rates as the illegal machine guns.

Moylan sponsored Senate Bill 2343 in the House and the legislation passed out of the Judiciary committee earlier on Tuesday. Senate Bill 2343 simply outlaws the sale, manufacture, purchase, possession and use of these potentially dangerous devices. Law enforcement and active military are exempt under this bill.

“We need to ban these terrible devices to keep our schools and families safe in our communities,” Moylan said. “Again, I refuse to stop advocating for common sense gun reforms and will not back down to the NRA, because enough politicians in Washington have refused to fight for change and children continue to get shot and break up communities.”
