D’Amico Supports Property Tax Relief for Police and Fire Injured in the Line of Duty

CHICAGO – State Rep. John D’Amico, D-Chicago, is supporting a bill to create an exemption for police and firefighters who suffer a debilitating injury while on the job.

“Those who are sworn to protect and serve us deserve for the state to do everything it can to look out for them in turn,” D’Amico said. “If someone is injured in the line of duty, the least we can do is provide them and their families with some financial relief.”

Senate Bill 3197 creates a homestead exemption of up to $5,000 for police officers and firefighters whom suffered a duty-related injury. The exemption allows applies to a surviving spouse of an individual killed in the line of duty. SB 3197 would expand upon similar exemptions already in existence, such as those for the disabled and disabled veterans.

“Property taxes can be a burdensome expense for working families,” D’Amico said. “It is my goal that this legislation will provide some well-deserved relief and peace of mind to those who have served us.”
