DES PLAINES, Ill. – After hearing many complaints from constituents about how the tollway excessively charges small trailers, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, introduced a bill to lower the amount of money the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority can charge towed trailers and medium trucks at toll booths. Last week, the Moylan-introduced bill passed the house and has been sent to the state Senate.

“This is a literal example of highway robbery,” Moylan said. “We cannot allow the tollway to continue to get away with charging hidden and excessive fees on families in Illinois any longer.”

Moylan’s House Bill 1620 will cap the tolls that can be charged to vehicle-trailer combinations traveling along Illinois highways. This is because, in many cases, passenger vehicles hauling trailers are charged the same as semi-trucks hauling large trailers due to the amount of axels on the car-trailer combinations. This bill will take into account the amount of axels but will cap the tolls if the vehicle is just a regular passenger vehicle towing a trailer. Moylan’s bill passed the house with overwhelming support and has been sent to the state Senate for consideration.

“We cannot sit idly by while too many families are being forced to pay excessive charges by the Illinois Tollway,” Moylan said. “We need to find ways to lower everyday costs for Illinois residents, not nickel and dime them.”
