Manley Pledges to Oppose Ban on Tackle Football

JOLIET, Ill. – State Representative Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, is pledging to oppose legislation that would create a ban on tackle football for children under 12.

“Football is an American tradition, and team sports are an excellent opportunity for children to build friendships and learn important skills that will assist them later in life, like leadership, cooperation and communication,” said Manley.  “There are many benefits to team sports, like football. It should be up to parents to make the decision as to what is best for their child, and up to coaches to ensure that children are as safe as possible when participating in sports.”

Manley has promised to vote no on House Bill 4341 if it is called for a vote on the House Floor. This bill, if signed into law, would not allow children under the age of 12 to participate in tackle football as part of an organized youth sports program.

“I would like to thank the coaches, parents, and advocates that took the time to share their thoughts and concerns with me on the proposed bill that would ban tackle football for children under 12,” continued Manley. “I appreciate your feedback and the huge amount of time each of you took to educate me and others. I learned about our youth football leagues overall and about the safety measures that are currently in place, as well as the advancements and investments in equipment and technology, but mostly, how deeply committed the coaches are to safety of their players. I will go forward as a strong voice for you in Springfield.”
