Crespo Votes to Pass Commonsense Gun Safety Measures

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Fred Crespo, D-Hoffman Estates, voted to pass a series of commonsense gun safety measures this week, which among others, includes a ban on bump-stock trigger modifications like those used in the Las Vegas tragedy to convert firearms into automatic weapons.

“It is infuriating that time after time Congress does absolutely nothing to address senseless gun violence in our country,” Crespo said. “Our children and our communities could not wait any longer, which is why we decided to pass a series commonsense reforms at the state level to ensure the safety of suburban communities like the ones I represent, and others across our state.”

Crespo voted to pass a series of commonsense gun safety measures including:

• House Bill 1467, which bans bump-stocks and trigger cranks;
• House Bill 1465, which raises the age limit to purchase assault weapons from 18 to 21;
• House Bill 1468, which extends the waiting period for assault weapons; and
• Senate Bill 1657, which expands licensing requirements for gun dealers.

The House is still set to consider measures to strengthen mental health provisions and a ban on high capacity magazines.

“These reforms are not perfect, but they will without a doubt decrease the number of potential mass shooting in our state,” Crespo said. “I’m glad to have seen both parties put their politics aside for some of these measures and I encourage Governor Rauner to do the same. Our children deserve better.”
