D’Amico Supports Common Sense Gun Safety Bills

CHICAGO – State Rep. John D’Amico, D-Chicago, supported a gun safety package that recently passed out of the Illinois House.

“Passing legislation to keep guns out of the hands of those who pose a risk to society is long overdue,” D’Amico said. “While the 2nd amendment is the law of the land, it is important that we enact laws to make sure no more innocent lives are lost due to easy access to firearms and only law abiding citizens are able to carry.”

The package consisted of 4 bills which aim to prevent further gun violence and protect the citizens of the state. The bills consisted of many key reforms, such as requiring gun dealer licensing, increasing the age for the purchase and possession of assault weapons, banning bump stocks, and extending the waiting period for the purchase of assault weapons. The gun dealer licensing act originated in the Senate and now will be sent to the governor for him to sign into law. All of the other bills originated in the House and will be sent to the Senate.

“I applaud all those in our state, from the parents to the students fighting to protect each other from more senseless deaths,” D’Amico. “It goes to show that when we work together, real reforms are possible. We still have work to do, but these votes show that progress is being made.”
