MONTGOMERY, Ill. – State Rep. Matt Hanson, D-Montgomery, released the following statement in response to University of Illinois Chicago’s (UIC) funding approval for the new Drug Discovery and Cancer Research Pavilion, made possible by the Illinois General Assembly:

“During this Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I want to congratulate UIC—especially the UI Cancer Center and the College of Pharmacy—on the new Drug Discovery and Cancer Research Pavilion. The opportunities and support this facility plans to provide for patients is nothing short of inspiring.

“UIC plans to use this new space to address disparities in treatment, develop cutting-edge therapies, and lead the conversation on innovative cancer research. Cancer diagnoses can be very scary for both the patients and their loved ones. I hope UIC’s new approach will help improve the cancer care experience for everyone, and more than that, I hope it helps save lives.

“This pavilion is a prime example of why our compassionate state budgets are essential. Thanks to over $150 million in state capital appropriations, UIC is expanding opportunities for students and researchers, and treatment options for patients and families. Investing in projects like the Drug Discovery and Cancer Research Pavilion is how we invest in the people of Illinois. One day at a time, we’re establishing a better path forward for our great state.”
