SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Jay Hoffman, D-Swansea, is highlighting his work this spring legislative session to make life more affordable for families, strengthen support for schools and reinforce protections for workers.
“Budgets are increasingly tight for families, which is why I’ve been focused on pursuing responsible solutions that address higher costs, invest in opportunity and put people first,” Hoffman said. “From groceries to insurance, the proposals we passed will help residents keep more of their hard-earned money.”
Some highlights of Hoffman’s affordability agenda include:
- Freezing the state gas tax and instituting a sales tax holiday (Senate Bill 3019),
- Making groceries and everyday purchases more affordable by giving everyone access to digital coupons so that the price people see is the price they pay (House Bill 45),
- Creating new protections against artificial intelligence (AI) schemes that use personal data to raise prices (House Bill 4248),
- Delivering transparency requirements to crack down on hidden junk fees (House Bill 228),
- Stopping unfair insurance increases designed to pad profits or make Illinois customers cover losses in higher-risk states (Senate Bill 1486), and
- Expanding on utility relief by helping more households access home energy assistance (House Bill 4456).
Hoffman also backed a responsible and compassionate state budget plan Monday that increases funding for schools, prioritizes support for public safety and protects essential services for seniors.
“This is a balanced plan that respects taxpayers, builds on our fiscal progress and invests in the priorities facing families across our community,” Hoffman said. “In an era of uncertainty, good financial stewardship is critical for our state’s health. This is a forward-thinking budget that addresses the challenges of today and looks to build a stronger Illinois as we move ahead.”
Hoffman also continued to build on his pro-worker initiatives, leading new updates (House Bill 4725) for the Attorney General’s Workplace Rights Bureau to support its mission of addressing workplace safety, wage theft and other unfair employment practices.
“This has been a productive session, but there’s more work ahead,” Hoffman said. “When we put politics aside, work together and focus on the concerns facing families, we can create a stronger Illinois that meets the demands of today and tomorrow.”
