CHICAGO— . State Rep. Michael Crawford, D-Chicago, released the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais allowing states to redraw congressional maps without ensuring minority votes are equitably represented:
“This decision by the Supreme Court is a devastating blow to civil rights and voting rights around the country. The Voting Rights Act was the product of our ancestors’ blood, sweat and tears and we will not let their hard work be erased or undone. Without these provisions insisting on fair representation for minorities, leaders like myself may not have the opportunity to represent our communities simply based on our race.
“I want to be clear: this ruling sets a dangerous precedent for redistricting, but it does not completely dismantle the Voting Rights Act. I’m committed to doing what it takes to protect voting rights and access here in Illinois despite federal backsliding.
“I’m proud of the work we’ve done so far to protect voting rights and equity, and I’m looking forward to ensuring elected officials in Chicago reflect our community, diversity, and culture.”
