SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Camille Y. Lilly, D-Chicago, is recognizing a significant step forward in expanding preventive health care after legislation she co-sponsored to improve access to life-saving heart screenings passed the Illinois House.
“Heart disease continues to impact far too many families across our state, often without warning,” Lilly said. “We have the tools to detect problems earlier, and this measure helps ensure those tools are within reach for more people—especially those who may not otherwise have access.”
House Bill 4207 strengthens early detection of heart disease by requiring most health insurance plans, beginning in 2028, to cover medically necessary coronary calcium scans every 36 months for individuals aged 40 and older.
Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death in Illinois and across the country. Coronary calcium scans are a proven tool for identifying early signs of heart disease, allowing patients and physicians to take preventive action before serious complications arise.
“Preventive care is one of the most effective ways we can improve health outcomes and reduce long-term costs,” Lilly said. “By expanding coverage for these screenings, we’re empowering individuals to make informed decisions and work with their providers to protect their health.”
The legislation now advances to the Senate for further consideration.
