SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — State Rep. Lilian Jiménez, D-Chicago, is supporting new legislation that would aid Illinois high school graduates in finding work in in-demand careers by establishing a high-school-to-training-program pipeline with grants from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).
“Anytime we can open more opportunities for students to obtain a career, we are strengthening their futures and the workforce with qualified trained workers,” said Jiménez. “This bill creates a career bridge for young adults who could be unsure of their future careers due to training demands and training costs.”
Jiménez is supporting House Bill 4354, which would help establish public-private partnerships with employers, public community colleges and school districts. Both ISBE, as well as the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) would need to approve programs and implementation. They would also jointly maintain a registry of participating schools and employers.
For each participating employer, ISBE would provide a $1,000 grant per student, up to $50,000 per year.
“Many times, we find students not being able to pursue higher education to learn and train for a career because of financial costs,” Jiménez. “By investing in these programs and supporting students financially, we’re making it easier for young people to gain the skills they need to succeed while helping Illinois businesses grow.”
The bill is currently assigned to the House Appropriations-Elementary and Secondary Education Committee, awaiting an initial public hearing.
