GURNEE, Ill. — State Rep. Joyce Mason, D-Gurnee, has signed on to a bi-partisan letter organized by the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators (NCEL) addressing the growing energy demand for data centers and how it has been impacting consumer energy costs.

“Most of us have experienced an uptick in energy costs over the past year, which, for many, has caused significant financial strain,” said Mason. “The NCEL’s letter promotes transparent energy expectations and prices, and that ratepayers are not burdened by the growing need for data centers.”

Over the course of 2025 and into 2026, nationwide concerns have been raised about increasingly expensive energy bills and the impact of big data centers on energy needs. Oftentimes, utility companies make decisions about energy pricing behind closed doors, without notifying ratepayers, stirring further financial uncertainties for residents and families, especially as energy demands continue to rise. The NCEL letter emphasizes the importance of maintaining a price cap, increasing energy efficiency and ensuring fair costs for all, specifically in areas covered by the Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland Interconnection (PJM), including Mason’s district.

Mason serves as Vice Chairperson on the House Energy and Environment Committee and chief sponsored House Bill 1802 last spring, which seeks to increase communication and transparency between utility companies and consumers—so Illinois ratepayers are aware of any and all decisions that directly affect the price and efficiency of energy in their area.

“Like cell phones and social media, younger generations are not going to know a world without AI. But it’s our responsibility to make sure they inherit a system that is honest and affordable, because these outrageous energy prices cannot be the standard. With regulated energy costs, families can focus on what really matters and not have to worry about saving money to pay for basic energy needs,” said Mason.

The letter was submitted to the PJM Interconnection Board and can be read in full here.
