EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – State Rep. Katie Stuart, D-Edwardsville, released the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court declaring tariffs President Donald Trump initiated with emergency orders are illegitimate:
“I’m happy to hear the Supreme Court has recognized what we all see—the president cannot unilaterally assert a tariff by feigning emergency circumstances and forgoing Congressional approval entirely.
“These tariffs are completely ineffective; while claiming to penalize other countries, American taxpayers ended up footing over 90% of the bill for tariffs. This is simply unjust and should be made right.
“Last month I proudly supported House Resolution 623. The resolution called for the president to rescind his tariffs and reimburse the people who really paid for these tariffs—American taxpayers. I’m glad to see that at least some of these tariffs will be rescinded, and hope the federal government will right the financial wrongs they’ve done to Americans.”
