CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Civil rights icon and longtime role model of state Rep. Carol Ammons, D-Urbana, Rev. Jesse Jackson Jr. passed away on Tuesday. Ammons spoke on the House Floor regarding the loss of a trailblazer, and releases the following statement:
“I was lucky enough not just to look up to Rev. Jesse Jackson, but to walk alongside him. I’m a student of Rainbow Push and Operation Breadbasket, some of the finest works in Rev. Jackson’s long, storied career. Rev. Jackson inspired me to lead my community with pride, and to always advocate for those who could not advocate for themselves. He deepened my passion for voting rights and equity, an ongoing battle I continue to fight with legislation today. He taught me dedication and perseverance.
“Rev. Jackson’s loss is not felt only in Chicago— the loss of a civil rights giant is felt across the state, across America, and across the world. He truly advocated for everyone, no matter what their situation was, and that’s what the fight for equity is all about.”
“Rev. Jackson famously tokened ‘I am somebody.’ I hope as he leaves his earthly form, we all remember we are somebody, too, and it’s our responsibility to carry the torch Rev. Jackson has been carrying for decades. Let us be proud of all he accomplished, and work fiercely toward more progress and equity in his name.”
