SPRINGFIELD, Ill.- State Rep. Lilian Jiménez, D-Chicago, has issued the following statement following Governor J.B. Pritzker’s State budget address highlighting child care affordability and lowering costs for Illinoisans:

“My top priority is making our next state budget smart and fiscally responsible. Through the budget, we continue to find a way to keep services running and resources available all while lowering everyday costs. The federal government has made countless attempts to limit our essential services by freezing federal funding and increasing the costs of necessities through senseless tariff wars.

“The federal government’s policies have effectively taxed households and extra $1,200 with illegal tariffs and raised the costs of health insurance premiums by thousands of dollars, creating excessive costs for hard working people. Trump’s administration also attempted to freeze childcare funds for our state that would have caused many people to lose their jobs and childcare facilities to shut down. However, Illinois continues to push ahead and prepare for what the administration has in store for us. We are not backing down.

“The governor’s budget address is only the first step in this fight, and the real work starts now. By going line-by-line, we are creating a budget that will lower the cost of living and help families and working people make ends meet. Illinois must take control of what we can and continue moving forward even with the challenges imposed by the federal government.”
