SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Aarón Ortíz, D-Chicago, has introduced a plan to expand the availability and accessibility of broadband services to more low-income Illinoisans, ensuring families and students have a quality internet connection to complete studies and work.

“Too many students during the COVID-19 pandemic and recent weather events have been unable to complete their homework and stay ahead of the curve,” Ortíz said. “This legislation will ensure that those who qualify for internet access assistance can, and will, get it. Affordable broadband is an issue of equity for communities like mine, and I will fight everyday to make sure no one falls through the cracks.”

Ortíz’s House Bill 4561 creates the Illinois Low Income Broadband Assistance Program which aims to expand the availability and affordability of broadband service to low-income families by providing free or subsidized broadband service.

Under Ortíz’s measure, families at or below 135% the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) will be eligible for free broadband service. Families whose household income is between 135% and 150% the FPL will receive a $9.95 monthly credit. The same credit will be applied to families who qualify for SNAP, Supplemental Security Income benefits and other assistance programs.
