SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Amy “Murri” Briel, D-Ottawa, is speaking out about the recent actions of the the Trump Administration, passing official condemnations of Trump’s reckless tariffs and misguided foreign policy, drastic cuts to child care and familial life lines, and the deadly immigration force employed by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem that has killed an estimated 50 individuals, including U.S. citizens.

“Whether I’m here in my community of Ottawa or walking through the Capitol in Springfield—the message I’m hearing from families alike, is that life is way too hard right now. It’s scary. It shouldn’t have to be,” said Briel. “Here’s the thing. If we, as elected officials that represent families with children, aging mothers and fathers, and everyone else who calls Illinois home, don’t speak up—change will never happen. That’s why it was imperative to publicly call out the wrongdoings and, honestly, the sabotage of the working class that has been fueled by a reckless, cash grab administration that’s just looking for the next con. To that, we say ‘no more’.”

The Briel-backed resolutions passed Jan. 21st call out Trump’s unchecked military operations that span from Venezuela to threatening a forceful seizure of Greenland—actions that surpass the cost it would take to stabilize SNAP benefits for more than 310,000 Americans back home, expired subsidies from the Affordable Care Act (ACA), child care and hundreds of millions of additional dollars for working families that the federal administration has unilaterally cut across democratic majority states. Briel also called on the domestic, lethal extremism led by DHS Secretary Kristi Noem that has scarred U.S. cities nationwide through unfounded shootings, illegal detainments and the refusal of due process, a protection guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.

Briel voted to:

  • Urge Congress to reinstate the healthcare subsidies within the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 to keep healthcare affordable and accessible for over 500,000 Illinoisans who depend on the ACA marketplace. (House Resolution 620)
  • Call for the immediate release of the $10 billion in child care funds frozen across democratic-majority states, including over $1 billion to Illinois families and children facing poverty, chronic illness or disability. (House Resolution 621)
  • Prompt the United States Treasury to issue $2,000 payments to every American household with an annual income below $250,000 to account for the lost wages and savings undone by Donald Trump’s tariff scheme that raised prices for every U.S. family. (House Resolution 623)
  • Call on Congress to hold Donald Trump accountable for his illegal use of military action and American dollars to fund illegitimate operations, including in Venezuela, unprovoked attacks toward Cuba and Iran, and threats of forcefully pursuing Greenland’s autonomous territory. (House Resolution 624)
  • Condemn the excessive and deadly force deployed by civil immigration agents under the direction of DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, by calling for her immediate resignation and an independent investigation into committed, directed or covered up acts of violence, killings and deaths in immigration custody. (House Resolution 622)

“These resolutions are just the beginning of how I plan to stand up for not only my neighbors, but everyone who has raised their families here for generations,” said Briel. “I’m prepared to move Illinois forward, no matter how hard the federal administration tries to thwart our progress here.”
