CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. – A comprehensive energy plan backed by state Rep. Anthony DeLuca, D-Chicago Heights, and recently signed into law will provide relief on consumer bills, create jobs and strengthen the state’s electric grid moving forward.

Importantly, as part of efforts to modernize the state’s energy infrastructure, the measure lifts the state’s longstanding nuclear moratorium.

“Nuclear energy is a critical component of our state’s power generating network, and new construction will help address the state’s rising demands and be of benefit to consumers long term,” DeLuca said. “As new advancements in tech continue to increase energy demands, prioritizing nuclear better positions Illinois economically, encourages job creation and will provide safe, reliable power for communities across our state.”

Backed by data from the Illinois Power Agency, additional highlights of the DeLuca-supported Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act (Senate Bill 25) include:

  • Virtual Power Plants: By capturing clean energy already being generated as surplus power by home solar panels and other green sources, better coordination through virtual power plants can redistribute energy across the system and lower costs for all consumers.
  • Increased Battery Storage: Adding battery storage will make the grid more reliable and affordable, further acting as insurance for the system. This improvement is expected to help lower bills for ComEd users.
  • Energy Efficiency: By expanding and investing in energy efficiency programs, ComEd customers could see additional savings.

The DeLuca-backed measure and its associated investments are expected to create up to 115,000 jobs through construction and operating positions.

“This plan combines a number of changes to produce larger results for consumers,” DeLuca said. “Let’s continue to build on ideas that make life more affordable for residents, strengthen our economic standing and encourage growth for years to come.”

Senate Bill 25 was signed into law Thursday.
