OTTAWA, Ill. — State Rep. Amy “Murri” Briel, D-Ottawa, is highlighting an upcoming presentation on financial scams that target seniors and older adults as she kicks off her Council of Wise Elders advocacy group Monday, Jan. 26 from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at her Ottawa district office (628 Columbus Street, Suite 408).

“The Council of Wise Elders is an awesome way to meet other older adults around our community and educate ourselves on resources, tools and how we can advocate for better policy on aging adults—whether that’s healthcare or cost savings—it’s critical this information is accessible,” said Briel. “Avoiding financial scams are particularly concerning, so this meeting will be centered on what to look for and how to avoid risking our savings.”

Briel started the Council of Wise Elders last year to collaborate and discuss with older adults around Northwest Illinois on how to better represent seniors in policy. This meeting will mark the first council meeting of 2026 and will feature a presentation that educates older adults and seniors on how to protect themselves from scams and other financial exploitations. Brian Pastor of the Illinois Department on Aging will lead the discussion and answer any questions from the community.

Briel encourages anyone over the age of 60 who is interested in learning about hyperlocal policy and issues to join the Council of Wise Elders. For more information, you can call or text Briel’s district office at 815-587-7912.
