OTTAWA, Ill. — State Rep. Amy “Murri” Briel, D-Ottawa, is hosting a Human Trafficking Awareness Training in collaboration with Safe Journeys on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 5:30 p.m. at
her Ottawa district office (628 Columbus Street, Suite 408).

“Human trafficking is such a huge issue and it’s important we educate people on the signs and how to prevent it,” Briel said. “There are a lot of misconceptions surrounding how it happens as well, and we’re holding this training to increase awareness and public safety.”

Safe Journeys is a non-profit organization that provides support and shelter to survivors of domestic and sexual violence in LaSalle and Livingston counties. The training, titled “Human Trafficking Awareness Month: What is Human Trafficking?” will be presented by Grace McCormick of Safe Journeys. It will be available to view as a recording later on Briel’s website.

Last year, the state of Illinois received an A report from Shared Hope International’s Just Like Me Report Cards for providing protection to human trafficking survivors. Briel has also successfully led anti-trafficking legislation into law, barring people with human or sex trafficking convictions from adopting or fostering children.

“There’s still so much work to do,” Briel said. “But we’re confident that we can continue making a change and making our state safer.”
