Ottawa, Ill.— State Rep. Amy “Murri” Briel, D-Ottawa, and her team attended a community Christmas tree decorating event in Washington Park last month , where sponsors of the Ottawa Community Christmas Tree were invited to join.
Briel and the team added pictures of community members to the “76th District Tree,” which were displayed as holiday ornaments.
“It was a fun way to get into the Christmas spirit,” Briel said. “Not only did we get to celebrate holiday cheer and make the park shine, we also got the opportunity to recognize and celebrate amazing people in our community.”
With the community’s support, Briel and her team were able to contribute $7,500 to the Ottawa Community Food Basket. The donation comes at a crucial time where more and more Illinois families are grappling with food security due to cuts at the federal level.
“We were proud to be able to contribute critical resources like food, water and other supplies to help feed people and keep them safe as we approach winter,” Briel said. “We hope everyone has a safe holiday season as we continue working together to ensure our neighbors are healthy and fed.”
The event started at 11 a.m. and concluded at 2 p.m. The Christmas trees in the park in downtown Ottawa will remain on display throughout the holiday season.
