CHICAGO – Following his successful fight to deliver mobile identification options to Illinoisans, state Rep. Kam Buckner, D-Chicago, is announcing that legislation he spearheaded will now enable residents to store their drivers’ licenses and state IDs on their phones using Apple Wallet.

“I’ve led the effort to create digital identification in Illinois for years because it’s time to modernize such a fundamental part of everyday life,” Buckner said. “For all the people who are tired of bulky wallets and overfull purses, digitizing an ID can eliminate clutter. For everyone who sometimes makes the mistake of leaving their wallet or purse at home, having digital identification can add peace of mind. Starting Wednesday, we’re going to take advantage of modern technology to make our lives easier.”

This mobile ID effort was led by Buckner, who first filed legislation in 2019. His passage of House Bill 4952 authorized its development under the Secretary of State. Apple Wallet users will be able to digitize their drivers’ licenses and state IDs beginning Wednesday morning, and the same ability will further rollout for Samsung and Google users next year. Security is a priority, with modern identification confirmation options and security features in smartphones expected to keep IDs protected after digital storage.

Possessing a mobile ID is optional. Illinoisans who wish to keep using physical licenses are welcome to do so.

“As we move into an increasingly digital world, allowing an updated identification system is a clear next step,” Buckner said. “Standard IDs will of course remain an option, but for people who want an alternative, we are now providing one. I thank the Secretary of State for his part in the successful rollout of this update.”
