SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – In the tragic event of an accidental death on a job, a proposal from state Rep. Marti Deuter, D-Elmhurst, would ensure impacted families receive $10,000 from the employer for burial expenses, an increase in the $8,000 rate that has been in place since 2006.

“This is an overdue update that reflects increased burial costs and is more respectful to families experiencing a difficult loss,” Deuter said. “As much as we try to avoid them, these accidents do happen, and we need to have an appropriate amount of support available for impacted loved ones as they handle arrangements.”

Deuter’s House Bill 4177 would be the first increase for the benefit under the Workers’ Compensation Act since 2006, when the amount was raised from $4,200 to $8,000. Responsibly updating to $10,000 reflects increased burial costs and would bring Illinois into greater alignment with benefits in other states.

“Families deserve better than what is available right now,” Deuter said. “Nothing can adequately make up for the loss they’re experiencing, but an increase in this benefit is an important step forward in creating a better path for healing. I look forward to leading this proposal in Springfield.”
